In 1989, immediately following the fall of the iron curtain, the Gebrüder Weiss Austrian forwarding and logistics concern decided to set up branches in Hungary. Alfred Drek – who has retired since – started implementing the plan. A few months later, in February 1990, the Hungarian organization launched operations with 6 employees as a representation office.
The development of international bulk carrier and storage logistics services relying on western European import and winning over leading clients resulted in the on-going expansion of the company. As a further stage along the road to success, GW set up its air and sea freight traffic division at Ferihegy Airport in 1994.
Hungaroweiss moved to a new, modern and well-equipped logistics terminal in July 2002 located in Dunaharszti at the southern boundary of Budapest, directly next to Motorway M0. In the meantime, the new center evolved into an east-west platform playing a key role. The total storage space of the terminal was initially 10.536 m2; due to on-going extensions, logistics operations are today undertaken in a storage area of 23.500 m2.
The Austrian Alfred Gastgeb was appointed CEO of Hungaroweiss in 2003, at which point new services were added to the operations profile. Regular southeastern European export bulk carrier services were included in the operations profile, and a customs service unit stationed in the terminal began to operate.
Due to sound preparations and the explosive growth of export commissions, Hungaroweiss Hungary proved successful at the time of Hungary’s accession to the EU on 1 May 2004. As opposed to financial disadvantages relating to revenue losses relating to customs operations, accession engendered highly positive changes. Processes could be optimized due to the elimination of border controls and the quality of services further improved.
The Hungarian subsidiary is a successfully operating Gebrüder Weiss branch in Hungary in 2008, which is managed by a young and dynamic international team with Thomas Schauer at the helm. A total of 200 employees are committed to providing delivery and logistics services; leading multinationals operating on the global market and small and medium-size enterprises equally trust the company and use it on a regular basis. As regards the market leader position reached in the Central-Eastern European market in the meantime in the area of bulk forwarding, the employees of GW Hungary can truly be proud of how well they have performed.
